High Street flat refurbishment
This flat refurbishment for a local developer focuses on high-quality traditional design to create a timeless new dwelling.
Previously, the flat had stood vacant for years, taking up a valuable position within the market town of Alcester without benefitting the community. The developer owner wanted to modernise the site to help provide an exceptional but affordable home that is much in need within the local area.
The site is directly on the High Street of Alcester and so occupies a dominant position in relation to the street scene. Many of the nearby buildings are listed and fall within a conservation area so the design evolved in collaboration with the local authority conservation officer. It was noted that local planning policy (including many documents that were created to gauge public opinion) identified the site as 'insensitive' and 'visually jarring with the overall harmony of the two adjacent building groups'. MWArchitectural worked with the client to improve the appearance of the site and enhance the High Street as a whole.
Traditional timber sash windows and the front-facing elevation were particular areas of concern and so detailed drawings for the former and options for the latter were produced. An off-white cream painted brick was eventually decided for the front elevation, complimenting the many examples of such a material directly opposite and further along the High Street.
